Description: The islands and open waters of the Pacific support millions of seabirds. There is also a handful of rail, coot and gallinule species which is highly at risk.

Geographic Extent: Extends across a vast area of the north and central Pacific Ocean encompassing numerous islands and island groups under U.S. jurisdiction.

BCRs: Hawaii (BCR 67), Insular Pacific-Hawaiian (PBCR 80) and the open waters of the Pacific Ocean (PBCR 82).

Plans, Implementation and Resources

Pacific Region Seabird Plan coverThe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 1, which includes Hawaii and other Pacific islands, has prepared a Pacific Region Seabird Conservation Plan. The purpose of the plan is to set goals and priorities for the Service, and serve as a guide to coordinate Service activities with partners in the region.

 

 

 

 

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has developed a Recovery Plan for Hawaiian Waterbirds, (includes Hawaiian Common Moorhen and Hawaiian Coot) and the Guam Rail (contact biologist with USFWS Pacific Islands Region Endangered Species Program).
